Lessengers Addresses the Hyperscale Data Center Bandwidth and Energy Consumption Crunch

Industry-First 1.6 Terabit Multimode Optical Transceivers for AI/ML Workloads
Date: 2025-04-15

SEOUL & SAN FRANCISCO -- LESSENGERS Inc., a provider of innovative optical components based on its patented “direct optical wiring” (DOW) technology, announced an industry-first 1.6T OSFP 2×SR4 optical transceiver with multimode optics to address the growing bandwidth and energy crunch resulting from the increasingly complex AI/ML workloads in hyperscale data centers.

Hyperscale data centers require increasingly higher bandwidth and lower latency to keep up with the massive data processing demands. This is driving the need for 1.6 Terabit per second (Tbps) optical transceivers, which is the highest bandwidth available today and which will play a crucial role in ensuring efficient and high-speed data transfer between compute, storage, and networking nodes.

Furthermore, having multimode capability is vitally important as multimode fiber (MMF) is the predominant medium for interconnecting servers, switches and other equipment within the data center. For reasons of cost and performance, MMF excels in connections less than 100 meters and the majority of AI clusters in hyperscale / cloud data centers are connected to each other or to network equipment within this range.

Lessengers DOW technology (see description below) has enabled the development of low-power and low-cost 1.6T optical solutions with the following key features:

· Lower power consumption - 4 W, 10 W and 16 W for LPO, LRO and Retimed, respectively
· 8 × 224G PAM4 Electrical Interfaces
· Compliant with the latest industry specifications: OSFP MSA, IEEE P802.3dJ and OIF CEI-224G
· 200G PAM4 VCSEL/PD
· Dual MPO12

All of Lessengers products are based on the company’s patented DOW technology, which is a polymer-based air-cladded waveguide technology that is particularly useful for optical interconnects in the data center and high-performance computing environments. DOW is a direct coupling method that replaces the use of lens optics in transceivers, which can introduce several types of errors and optical impairments that affect signal quality, transmission efficiency, and overall system performance.

“We are excited to unveil our new 1.6 Terabit capacity transceiver at OFC 2025, which will showcase a number of groundbreaking optical innovations for the hyperscale data center,” said Chongcook Kim, CEO of Lessengers. “We believe our product will set new benchmarks for low-power and low-cost at the 1.6T level.”

“For AI/ML workloads in hyperscale data centers, LPO and LRO are increasingly favored for their power efficiency and low latency, whereas retimed optics are used when the link accountability and interoperability are prioritized,” said Dr. Vladimir Kozlov, CEO and founder of LightCounting Market Research. “Therefore, not only are we seeing the progression from 800G to 1.6T optics, but the transceiver suppliers must offer a range of power budgets as well.”

In addition to the live demonstration of the 1.6T transceiver, Lessengers will feature at its booth (5221) in the Moscone Center (April 1 - April 3), 800G/400G optical transceiver and active optical cable products, future connectivity options with co-packaged and near-packaged optics assemblies and a demonstration of how DOW facilitates the benefits of immersion cooling in the data center.
