Korean NGO ¡®VANK¡¯ Launches English Website Disclosing China¡¯s Attempts to Distort Korean History and Culture

VANK¡¯s website, ¡®The Great Wall Paradox¡¯ that discloses China¡¯s attempts to distort Korean history and culture
´º½ºÀÏÀÚ: 2022-04-18

SEOUL-- April 18, 2022 -- Voluntary Agency Network of Korea (VANK), an NGO with 200,000 worldwide members promoting Korea and its history online to the international audience, has launched an English website disclosing the truth about the Chinese government’s efforts to distort Korean history by systematically adjusting the length of the Great Wall of China.

The website, ‘The Great Wall Paradox’ (http://greatwall.prkorea.com), created with Notion, is comprised of three main sections. The first talks about the original location of the Great Wall, why and how it has been modified, and why this issue matters. It discloses the truth behind China’s false claim that the Great Wall, originally approximately 6,000-kilometer long, has now become 21,196.18 kilometers in length, long enough to reach Pyongyang.

Moving on, the website provides proofs of educational materials that distort delineations of the Great Wall, criticizing problems beyond the Great Wall and China’s cultural imperialism. It presents excerpts from 50+ publications from various English publishers around the world to show how the Great Wall has been depicted incorrectly. VANK warns that students who are exposed to false information in these books would believe that the history of Korea’s ancient kingdoms such as Goguryeo and Balhae was part of Chinese history.

Besides, the website also delivers distinct proofs of the recent surge of China’s cultural hegemony encroaching on unique Korean culture. Hanbok and Gat, the traditional Korean clothes, and Kimchi, Ssam and Samgyetang, the renowned Korean foods are now absurdly claimed as of Chinese origin by China, according to sources indicated on the website.

On the last section, the site brings a sample letter of request to the editors of books carrying false information about the Great Wall, as well as VANK’s global petitions and campaign posters against China’s attempts to distort Korean history and culture. VANK’s activities, which have been featured in various media outlets over the past 20 years, are also displayed on the website.

VANK (Voluntary Agency Network of Korea) is a cyber diplomatic organization which started in 1999 when a young man exchanged an e-mail with a foreign friend. Now, there are 200,000 VANK members who have the same dream of becoming cyber diplomats to let the world know about Korea and carry the vision of ‘Korea, as being the hub of Asia and gateway to Northeast Asia; along with being a country which shares its dream, friendship and business with all people around the world.’ They spare no effort in realizing this vision by helping the world get to know Korea on the Internet as cyber diplomats.
