TOKYO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Keio Plaza Hotel (KPH), one of Japan’s most prestigious international hotels located in Shinjuku, Tokyo, will host a special exhibition of traditional Japanese art crafts entitled “The World of Japanese Traditional Imperial Palace Style Dolls and Hanging Decorations” in celebration of the “Girls’ Day Doll Festival (Hina-matsuri)” from February 1 to March 3, 2015. “Hina-matsuri” is a traditional celebration held annually when families pray for the health and happiness of female children, and is known for its colorful dolls and ornaments that embody the atmosphere of spring season when it is celebrated.

In addition to a “beautiful woven silk cloth hanging decoration” display, old Imperial Palace dolls presented to and used by court aristocrats’ families will also be displayed and provide a rare opportunity to view historically important doll art dating back to the Edo Period (1603-1868) on a complimentary basis.
“Traditional Imperial Palace Style Dolls,” created with characteristic round and cuddly styling with white skin colors to reflect the purity of children, were primarily used by Imperial Families and presented as gifts to aristocrats during the Edo Period to celebrate various festive occasions. In addition, woodblock prints of dolls created by Hasui Kawase, one of the most famous artists renowned for his woodblock prints created nearly 100 years ago, will also be on display. Other more contemporary Japanese dolls of the famous artist Shinkyo Nakamura will also be displayed.
The hanging decoration, which has become a popular attraction of this celebration, is comprised of 5,500 colorful handmade quilt decorations that stands 3.3 meters tall and surrounds other beautiful art items. Along with the exhibition, nine restaurants and lounges within our hotel will be decorated in “Hina-matsuri” themes, and our chefs will prepare special menus for guests to enjoy.
